Neville-ville

By sevnof9

This page is dedicated to my Quaker Parrot Neville. It will just be used as a place to keep track of his diet, health, and vocabulary, and anything else I want to throw in. :) If you have any QP (or any parrot) stories to share, please leave a comment! Any updates will be left in the comment section until I figure out a better plan.

Personality and quirks:
Neville is new so I have not had the chance to get to know him much just yet. So far he is a relaxed, mellow bird. He makes little noise. When he is out of his cage, he runs around quite a bit and wants to explore everything!

The name Neville means “New Town”. This name has been stuck in my head for quite some time and I never looked up the meaning until the other day. I just moved to a new city and then found him a short time after. :P

Not a whole lot to update on. Neville is still my cute little Nevzky. That’s been his nickname. He is still just as laid back as when I brought him home. He and Neelix get along great, in fact they sleep together in the same cage.

Nevz doesn’t spend much time in his big cage, he would much rather be in this smaller one I have, so I gave in. He still has access to the bigger one when he wants. The only times he goes into the large one is when I leave the house when they are awake.

He does not talk, except for “Step up!” which he says quite often. He has been, however, started to babble more lately. So I know that may or may not lead to anything.

I’ll post a link to his Twitter account and my YouTube account with some videos of him. :)

Today marks the first day that Neville has stood on my hand and not had a fit trying to get back to his cage. Usually he does nothing but beg and turn circles trying to get back. But tonight he chewed and tore up a hairband and also nibbled on my face a bit.

It made me feel so GREAT! I am glad he is gaining some trust in me :) :)

As I type this he is staring at me. He has been staring at me a lot more today than he normally does.

Neville has started to say “step up” or “up up”… it’s hard to tell. But he is saying this when he wants to come out of his cage when I come into the room. It’s just a little baby talk, but I am sure that’s what he is trying to say :) I do not know if this is something he had already learned from the breeder. She said she did not work on step ups much with him.

He is doing good in his cage and is very comfortable with it. He has not slept in his happy hut in it. He was in the smaller travel cage, but not this new one. I may need to move it to a different location.

He has that little child separation anxiety when I take him from his cage. He steps up well. But when I move away from the cage, he begs to go back to it and will try to jump as far as he can. It’s toned down only slightly. I have not pushed him much with it. I’ve only taken him from his cage once or twice a day this week. Slow steps….

He and Neelix are doing well together!!! They eat from the same bowl as each other. Only once in a while will Nevz get bossy and chase Neelix from his cage. It seems to be later at night when Nevz wants to go to sleep.

This morning I caught Nevz eating his Zupreem pellets. He has grown up on seeds so I did not know how long it would take for him to start eating good food :) He still favours seeds and I let him eat as much as he wants.

Hey, it’s DCTenor1 from Twitter, also known as the owner of Rudy the Parrot! I just wanted to stop by and wish you luck with Neville. My other bird, Winston, is a quaker parrot too. I got him back in October of 2000! He is living with my parents now. Here are some pictures. Enjoy :-)

I had a good day with Neville.
Mostly I have been leaving him alone. But tonight I had him out a bit to play around and we worked on step-ups. He has no idea what it means when I tell him “step up!” and push on his tummy. I decided to go the quick route and offer him a sunflower seed whenever he did a proper step-up. It took a few times, but he seemed to get it faster than has been my previous experiences.

It’s not too hard to train your bird to do this!
Have a seed in hand. Push up on the birds tummy and say “step up!” Most birds will automatically, when pushed up on their tummies, step up onto your finger. As soon as they do, offer them the treat. Give lots of verbal praises and then put them back down. Repeat a few times.

A few times I had to chase him around a bit. But he gave in after a few tries. Several times he would just put one foot onto my finger and then back away. I would keep pushing him until both feet are up and then give him the treat.

Also today he was on the back of my chair for a while. He kept jumping from my shoulder to the chair. He still doesn’t know what to think of me, but I am glad he is not afraid of me! He has even nibbled on my face a bit. :)
