I remember meeting my first black person when I was in the first or second grade in Puerto Rico. I was in awe. Her hair and her skin seemed to be so amazing. She was very proud of who she was. Her parents brought her up well. Her smile radiated throughout the whole room. She looked like the picture of happiness. Actually, she could have been racist as hell, but we were children and that kind of thought had not entered my mind.
One thing did confused the hell outta me. Why were people saying she was "black" when she was obviously brown. Sure, there are some blacks who are just that – black. But not all of them. Is it because the Arabs already have the "brown" label, and we can't label two groups the same?
And so there I was, roaming around the school asking others why people call them black. It confused me and bothered me because it was obviously not accurate. She's brown! Now my black neighbour who never shows up in a dark photo except for his teeth, he's black. Blue black.
So why couldn't a more accurate label be used. Why focus on a skin colour? Anyways? Are all "brown" people Arabs? Are all "white" people of European decent? If you think so, then my Jordanian friends would like to have a word with you.
Not that I actually care about this issue. Races hate each other and probably always will. But I remembered by first black friend the other day and it brought a smile to my face.
