These pictures were taken when my Zoology class visited the Oklahoma City Zoo Pachyderm Exhibit. We were allowed to visit the employee facilities. We learned a lot about the Rhinos here and got to touch and feed them. It was fun!!!

This is were the pachyderms are stationed during medical exams or other procedures where physical restraint is needed. |
This rhino came right up to us for ear rubs and pets. He really seemed to enjoy physical contact. |
The same rhino enjoying some contact. The rhinos reminded me of big lumpy horses. :) |
|
"Oh please pet me! Don't go away!" |
Rhino eye. |
The lazy guy rested his head on the door while we pet him. :) |
|
"Ahh That's the spot! Wait!! Come bacck!" |
Big, powerful horn. Cute sideways ears! |
Rhino's have a pointy prehensile upper lip which aids in foraging. They do not bite unless seriously provoked. |
|
Zoo staff introducing us to another male Rhino. |
"I smell banana. I want banana. Gimme banana." |
"Ahhhh, my banana." *nom nom nom* |
|
You do NOT want these to step on you. |
Skin folds. They have an odd elastic-bark feeling. The light coloured spots felt like embedded wood chips. | |
|
Beautiful draped Rhino skin. |
Rhino profile. |
I hope you enjoyed these pictures. If you ever get the opportunity to experience being close to such an amazing part of nature, please do not hesitate to take the offer. I learned a lot that day about these animals and it really broke through my ignorance and stereotypes that I had of these creatures. I hope this is not my first and last time with them. - Trekkieforlife |
